Cooley Vintage Festival

Report from Vintage Tractor Engineers roving Reporter:
Cooley Vintage Festival, in Ireland, achieved a World Record on Sunday 5 August 2007 when over 4000 vintage tractors were working in one field at the same time. All the pre-1977 tractors were accompanied by a working implement e.g. potato spinner, plough, harrow, disc..

Tractors came to Cooley from as far away as South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, & the USA, to take part in the World Wide event. On the day, tractors were travelling along the motorways on the backs of lorries, or being driven by their owners along the country roads leading to Cooley.

The thousands of tractors assembling to take part in the record attempt made a colourful site, in spite of the pouring rain. At 2.45pm the loudspeakers called all drivers to take to their seats and start their tractors. Some tractors struggled to start and had to be pulled from their position in the row for a jump start. As the time drew closer , fumes were pouring out of tractor exhausts and a haze developed over the field. Spectators were rubbing their stinging eyes as the tension grew, and every tractor driver had a smile on their face.

When the time came for the record attempt to begin, the noise and smell of the tractors was memorable. The loudspeaker was reporting the involvement of over 4,781 tractors. The tractors moved forward pulling the working implements, and proceeded to work in the field for at least 15 minutes. The world record was broken in a wonderful atmosphere of excitement and a result of tremendous communal effort.

Here’s some scenes from the festival…

      What people have said….

I’d just like to thank you for the MF35 rebuild DVD I purchased from you
recently, it has allowed me to transform my non-starting rebuilt 23c engine to a happily starting one, with only a day of stripping and readjusting - best £17 odd I’ve spent in a long time! I’d recommend the DVD to anyone. Cheers Alex.

Thanks to you and Ian for your help, it is running like a top now and blowing no smoke. If I speak to others rebuilding these tractors, I will tell them the first thing to get is your DVD.

A freind has your dvd, I think it’s awesome. If you made one rebuilding a 4cyl diesel nuffield, I’d be one of your first customers.

      Hi Vintage Tractor Engineer,
Thanks so much for the great DVD showing the 23c rebuild process. It’s so well made and will enable even an amateur like myself to attempt the engine and clutch rebuild. Even if our 1959 FE-35 23c MF (#SDM161488) is not urgently in need of a rebuild, we’ve learned so much about the intricacies of the engine that the enjoyment of owning the tractor is greatly increased. I’m very much looking forward to your DVD about the hydraulic system. It only took 9 days for the DVD to reach us here in Canada.
      Thanks again,

      P R BC Canada

The Standard diesel engine was notoriously difficult to start and any engine wear and resultant loss of compression will compound this problem. This often necessitates an engine rebuild for the FE 35, TO 35 or MF 35 tractors, and completing this task can transform a good restoration into a superb one. Due to the age of these tractors and the amount of work they have done it may not be the first time the engine has been rebuilt (the film shows what to look for when measuring the crankshaft and how to understand the marked numbers on the bearings), but what ever the circumstances we wish you well with you tractor retoration project.
